Description
This duckbill selenite specimen forms a dense, radiating cluster of tabular crystals, each blade extending outward in layered, geometric growth. The crystals show soft honeyed tones with areas of translucency, letting light pass through and highlight the internal structure. The characteristic "duckbill" shape comes from twinned crystal growth, creating the sculptural, fan-like forms seen throughout the piece.
This material is sourced from the Red River Floodway in Winnipeg, Manitoba; one of the most celebrated localities for this style of selenite, and now a closed site, making existing material increasingly hard to source. The crystals formed within ancient glacial lake clays left behind by Lake Agassiz, developing slowly in soft sediment that allowed them to grow freely into complete, undamaged clusters with their distinctive twinning habit; a genuinely Canadian mineral with a strong story behind it.
