Description

A luminous golden "potato chip" calcite from Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, mounted on a custom stand. Wafer-thin blades of calcite jut out at every angle, each one a crisp hexagonal plate tapering to an edge sharp enough to catch the light along its rim. The colour runs from pale honey at the base to a deep saturated marigold across the faces, with a soft frosted texture that makes the whole piece glow rather than glint. Held toward a window, the thinnest plates go fully translucent, and the gold passes straight through. Beneath them, a bed of small colourless calcite crystals sparkles against grey host rock.

Quzhou has become one of the most talked-about calcite localities in China, and this wafer habit is the reason why. Calcite almost always builds thick and blocky; here, mineral-rich fluids moving through limestone fed the crystals outward far faster than they grew in thickness, producing plates you can nearly read through. Iron carried in those same fluids gave the golden colour, deepening toward the outer margins where growth continued longest. Pockets like this appear in short runs and then stop, and specimens with undamaged edges, full colour, and complex three-dimensional groupings rather than loose single plates are the ones collectors chase as they are fragile an rare to see in this condition.

Calcite is known as a cleanser and amplifier, associated with clearing stagnant energy and restoring clarity. The warm golden tones link it to confidence, optimism, and creative momentum, making this a natural choice for a studio, a desk, or anywhere that could use more light.

You will receive the exact specimen and stand photographed.

Note

All crystals and ceramic works offered by Atelier Lithic are inherently unique. Variations in size, colour, surface texture, and form are natural and should be expected.

Crystals are natural materials formed in the earth and may include surface irregularities such as natural fissures, internal veils, growth marks, contact points from where the crystal was attached to the host rock, or areas where the specimen was mined or extracted. These features are part of the crystal’s natural formation and are not considered defects. Defects are disclosed within the item description.

For crystals:

  • When a listing includes numbered options (for example, 001, 002, etc.), each number corresponds to a specific crystal shown in the photos. Selecting a number means you will receive that exact crystal.
  • When a crystal is shown as a group or range and sold as a quantity of one without numbered options, the images represent examples of what is available. You will receive one crystal, selected from the group, with natural variation.

For ceramics:

  • All ceramic pieces are one of a kind. Unless otherwise stated, you will receive the exact piece shown in the listing photos.
