Description

This sculptural calcite specimen displays a series of unusual oval cavities and layered crystal growths that resemble watchful “eyes” embedded within the formation. Broad, translucent calcite blades radiate across the surface in warm honey and smoky tones, their faces marked by natural striations that catch and reflect light. Smaller calcite crystals fill the surrounding matrix, adding depth and a sparkling texture that contrasts with the smooth interior surfaces of the eye-like openings.

Specimens from the Longyan Mine in Fujian Province, China are known for their distinctive calcite formations and complex crystal habits. In this piece, calcite crystals grew around pockets and fractures in the host rock, later opening to reveal oval cavities bordered by crystalline edges. Iron-rich mineralization within the matrix creates the warm golden and earthy tones that frame the clearer calcite crystals, producing the layered “eye” structures that give the specimen its name.

Calcite is often associated with clarity, perspective, and energetic movement. Pieces with unusual natural forms like this are frequently placed in living spaces, studios, or offices where they serve both as geological curiosities and sculptural natural objects.

The specimen is mounted on a custom acrylic and metal display stand that elevates the piece and allows the eye formations and crystal faces to be viewed clearly from multiple angles.

Note

All crystals and ceramic works offered by Atelier Lithic are inherently unique. Variations in size, colour, surface texture, and form are natural and should be expected.

Crystals are natural materials formed in the earth and may include surface irregularities such as natural fissures, internal veils, growth marks, contact points from where the crystal was attached to the host rock, or areas where the specimen was mined or extracted. These features are part of the crystal’s natural formation and are not considered defects. Defects are disclosed within the item description.

For crystals:

  • When a listing includes numbered options (for example, 001, 002, etc.), each number corresponds to a specific crystal shown in the photos. Selecting a number means you will receive that exact crystal.
  • When a crystal is shown as a group or range and sold as a quantity of one without numbered options, the images represent examples of what is available. You will receive one crystal, selected from the group, with natural variation.

For ceramics:

  • All ceramic pieces are one of a kind. Unless otherwise stated, you will receive the exact piece shown in the listing photos.
