Description
This sphere shows optical calcite's signature water-clear transparency. The gentle doubling of light and softly visible internal cleavage planes is what gives the material its name. At 2.5 inches and 389g, it's a good display size, with clean, glassy clarity throughout.
Optical-grade calcite in this transparent quality is sourced from Mexico, where it's mined in commercial quantity for both the mineral and optics trade. Historically, the material was known as "Iceland spar," named for the original deposits in Iceland that were used in the early study of optics, though that classic locality is no longer a significant commercial source.
Metaphysically, optical calcite is associated with clarity, amplification, and perception. It is traditionally regarded as a stone that helps see situations more clearly, magnifies personal energy and intention, and supports insight during periods of confusion or decision-making. Its double-refraction quality is often linked symbolically to seeing "both sides" of a situation.
