Description
This specimen shows a sharp, elongated black tourmaline crystal with visible vertical striations running its length, embedded within a pale pink cream feldspar matrix. A second, smaller rounded black tourmaline crystal sits nearby, giving a nice sense of scale and repetition against the pale host rock.
The Bayer's Lake pegmatites near Halifax are associated with the South Mountain Batholith, the largest granitoid body in the entire Appalachian Mountain range, formed during the Late Devonian period roughly 370 million years ago and stretching from the Annapolis Basin all the way to Mount Uniacke, near Halifax. As this vast granite mass cooled, late-stage mineral-rich fluids concentrated into pegmatite pockets around its margins, crystallizing coarse-grained feldspar, quartz, and tourmaline like the specimen here. It's a locality tied to one of Atlantic Canada's most significant geological formations, and pieces like this offer a tangible connection to that deep continental history.
