Description
This wheel-thrown stoneware mug reveals the natural beauty of layered clay through a carved surface that exposes the marbled structure beneath. The exterior has been chiseled away in irregular facets, creating a textured pattern that feels both sculptural and tactile. The carved surface allows the swirling layers of clay to emerge, giving the mug an earthy, geological appearance reminiscent of sedimentary stone.
The interior and rim are finished with a rich teal glaze that pools slightly within the vessel, contrasting with the raw, carved clay body on the outside. This interplay between smooth glaze and textured clay highlights the transformation that occurs during the throwing and carving process.

“The marbled clay used for this wheel thrown mug spiralled as it was thrown on the wheel and was carved away in chunks to reveal the layers underneath.”
