Description
This wheel-thrown stoneware mug reveals the layered beauty of marbled clay through a carved exterior that exposes the patterns hidden within the material. The surface has been chiseled away in irregular facets, creating a tactile, sculptural texture that gives the piece the appearance of carved stone. As the clay was shaped on the wheel, the marbled layers spiraled through the form, and the carving process reveals these natural patterns like cross-sections of earth or sediment.
Inside the mug, a deep blue-green glaze lines the interior and rim, creating a smooth surface that contrasts with the raw, carved exterior. The rich glaze tones shift subtly with the light, echoing the organic variations found in the clay body. The rounded form and balanced handle make the mug comfortable to hold while highlighting the craftsmanship involved in shaping and carving the piece.
