Description
This specimen shows a striking stack of translucent, honey-gold calcite plates layered one over another in a cascading, fan-like formation, each lobed edge slightly offset from the next. Light passes through the plates beautifully, giving the piece a warm, glowing quality and real depth as it catches the light from different angles. The layered structure has a distinctly organic, almost shell-like rhythm to it, quite different from calcite's more typical rhombohedral habit.
This piece comes from the Daye mining district in Huangshi, Hubei Province, China. It's a region historically significant for copper and iron mining, with the Fengjiashan Mine among its best-known sources for fine calcite specimens. The layered, golden habit seen here is a distinctive and highly sought-after variety from this locality.
