This specimen shows deep purple, fluorite with hematite inclusions forming a rich crystalline crust, topped with sprays of pale peachy-tan bladed barite. The contrast between the dark, saturated purple fluorite and the warm, fibrous barite crystals gives the piece good colour and textural contrast in a compact size.
This piece comes from the Pays Plat Occurrence along Highway 17 near Rossport, Ontario. It's a locality within a composite vein hosted in Archean-age pink biotite granite of the Wawa-Abitibi Terrane. The vein itself, roughly 1 to 1.5 metres wide, is notably vuggy, with cavities up to 30 cm across, and shows a distinct internal zonation: a brecciated core surrounded by quartz and amethyst, grading outward to barite and purple fluorite near the vein walls. While amethyst is the site's primary draw, the purple fluorite and barite are well-regarded secondary finds from this same well-documented vein system, first explored and trenched in the early 1980s.
