Description
This specimen shows a dramatic swallowtail calcite twin, with long, blade-like crystal wings fanning outward from a dense cluster base in a striking wing-like formation. The crystals are translucent with soft champagne-to-charcoal tones, and a scatter of dark, sparkly inclusions at the base adds nice textural contrast against the pale, glassy blades.
Swallowtail calcite twins are a hallmark of Tongling, Anhui Province, China, one of the world's best-known localities for this striking growth form. The twinning occurs when calcite crystals grow together at a specific angle, producing the elongated, wing-like blades that give the variety its name; a formation prized by collectors for its sculptural, almost architectural appearance.
