Description
This wheel-thrown stoneware mug is created using three different clay bodies that were wedged together before forming, producing natural layered striations throughout the surface. Once thrown, the clay was burnished to accentuate these lines, creating a texture and pattern that closely resembles the grain of weathered wood.
A soft glaze gathers around the rim in deep turquoise and earthy tones, contrasting with the matte, wood-like surface below. The glaze settles naturally into the subtle contours of the form, giving the impression of a forest horizon where sky meets earth.
The rounded body and balanced handle make the mug comfortable to hold while highlighting the organic qualities of the clay. Because the clay bodies blend differently in each piece, every mug develops its own unique grain pattern, much like natural wood.
